William C. (“Bill”) Fanning, Jr., is the founder and principal attorney at Fanning Law, a La Plata family law firm serving clients across Charles County and throughout Southern Maryland.
About Bill Fanning
Bill Fanning has been in private practice since 1993, focusing on family law issues with an emphasis on divorce, child custody, and support. Mr. Fanning served five years as an Adjunct Professor of Family Law & Paralegal Studies at the College of Southern Maryland, La Plata Campus. He has had unprecedented success in obtaining winning settlements for his clients.
Mr. Fanning’s great understanding of the complicated issues involved with employment law matters as well as general business law and civil litigation has ensured courtroom success in these areas as well. Mr. Fanning has favorably represented personal injury claimants and criminal defendants throughout their often-complex cases. He has experience appearing before the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and the District of Maryland, and the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Bill is a 1988 graduate of Maryland’s Salisbury College and a 1991 graduate of Catholic University Columbus School of Law in Washington. D.C., where he was a member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity and the school’s Moot Court Association. He is admitted to practice in all Maryland state courts as well as the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and District of Columbia, The U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the DC Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Fanning believes in giving back to the community and volunteers his firm’s time and resources to worthy local causes. He provides free legal help to Marylanders in need through the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS) and supports the Child’s Voice Project, ensuring that children have an advocate in family court so their voices can be heard. He received the Governor’s Citation for Outstanding Service in 1995 and a Certificate of Recognition for his participation in the Court of Appeals mentoring program in 2012-2013. In 2003 he was recognized as a recipient of the 10-year Volunteer Award from MVLS.

Bill is a devoted husband and proud father of four. He enjoys traveling with his family, staying active through walking, and cheering on his favorite sports teams. A man of faith, he is actively involved in his church, St. Elizabeth and St. Anthony Catholic Parish, and is passionate about giving back through participation in various community services and projects. He enjoys an equal balance of work life and home life, and when not in the office, he can often be found tending to the family’s backyard chickens.
